What Is MAGA Anyway?
Every campaign needs a slogan, especially one for a former TV celebrity/real estate boss turned presidential candidate. Make America Great Again emerged as the top runner for Donald Trump and quickly morphed into the acronym MAGA. Without ever asking exactly what MAGA meant, millions of people began repeating the phrase — and more importantly, doling out dollars for caps, t-shirts, and anything MAGA red.
No one seemed to care about the inference; was America no longer great? Did anyone ever question what caused its fall from grace? To what period of greatness were we returning? In fact, why we were moving backward to past ideals instead of forward toward things even greater? By whose standards were America considered great? How would we know when we reached our goal and for whom would it be great? In the end, the slogan appeared to be more of a dog whistle for those whose lives had fallen short of expectations — and of course, those who needed someone else to blame. It garnered millions of followers who were willing to discover how their problems were the fault of others. Otherism as it was later named. But for those darn immigrants, those Muslims, Blacks, and Hispanics we’d still be really great.
